Admiral Cheng Ho

Spoilt for choice, Admiral Cheng Ho has a star coffee cast with seven grinders at the ready, filled to the brim with beans from around the world.  From the coffee and vegetarian experts that enlightened us with Monk Bodhi Dharma, the Admiral is a best of special, bringing the highlights of Monk to Abbotsford.

With a selection of beans from Brazil, El Salvador, Bolivia and Guatemala regularly available combined with some of the best vegan and vegetarian food Melbourne has to offer, the cafe is a melting pot of rugged ideas under the one little roof.

Tying the strong flavours of coffee and the warm, delicate mixture of vegetable and pulses together is the rough, handmade interior. Created pretty much exclusively by hand, owner Marwin Shaw has put a well thought out bundle of materials including, wood, metal, native plants, and art, fusing industrial concepts and nature together with their re-purposed baskets, wooden planks and plumbing pipes, laid out like pieces of artwork you can touch.

The coffee too is a piece of art with well balanced creamy yet strong and bold beans that work well however you take your coffee. The staff know their stuff and nurture the coffee with an extraordinary amount of respect making the cafe on the whole, a well rounded, cozy local that appreciates well crafted, farm fresh produce right though from kitchen to the coffee bar.

This article was updated on 26 August 2015 to remove the name of former owner Kate Shaw who is no longer involved with either cafe.
