Stone Brewing moves into Berlin
Take the U6 to the end of the line Alt Mariendorf, and walk east for fifteen minutes and you’ll come across Marienpark. Hidden down the back of the desolate property – resembling a scientific experimental field – past mysterious circular silos, a castle steeple minus the castle and an apparent “wrong turn” vibe and you’ll stumble across a bustling beer garden.
All the way from San Diego, USA Stone Brewing is sewing their European roots by launching into the highly conservative and coveted German market in the most practical location: Berlin. With heavy Reinheitsgebot or purity laws deeming the brewery must call their ‘beers’ IPA, pale ale, stout – refraining from the term beer – the challenge is both advantageous and destined for success.
With many visiting internationals and ex-pats settled in the area, the clear lack of innovative craft-micro-breweries is obvious whilst understandable given the tradition and loyalty surrounding the ageing beer market here in Germany. But times are changing and despite the somewhat isolated location, Stone Brewery bring a large reputation with them in the hope of developing not only their own Euro market share but for consumers, build a market around craft beer.
Opening in phases, the first earlier this year, the Library Bar is just the beginning of what will become a mega brewery complex with a restaurant bistro, beer gardens and a series of brewing rooms. Building their brand since 1996, the local Escondido brewery has grown tenfold, promoting their environmentally friendly practices from ethically sourced ingredients to traditional methods, for both beer and food. A keen supporter of the slow food movement the anticipation surrounding the restaurant is only a sample of what is possible at Stone Brewery.
Until the complex is fully open, happening in phases over the next six or so months, the meantime offers a well designed, rustic library bar with pared back designs, large serving area with over 25 taps on rotation and a sizable beer garden with caravan kitchen, perfect for the summer.
Stone Brewery is well worth the journey beyond the Ring for a quiet, country style, quality beer experience with experimental flavours and a passionate philosophy. Their only foreseeable problem will be their strong anti-smoking rules.
