Open for a little over twelve months, hidden in the shadows of the construction site that is Ostkreuz Spahn in Treptower, Happy Baristas has been quietly growing into a guaranteed go-to café in Berlin. Starting small with an ambitious coffee line up and a cabinet full of vegan friendly cakes, tarts and slices, the café drew an in-the-know crowd that quickly began to spread the word.
With a large floor space to fill, the décor is cosy and warm thanks to the British green palate and distressed wood furnishings that is well balanced with a level of chic minimalism usually reserved for intensely grey and austere spaces. The real highlight is the botanical feature in the middle of the space that hides a well-placed water filter supply. From floor to roof, a tree within a tree built from construction piping allows arms of indoor plants to creep over the surface illustrating a calm and shaded centrepiece as well as a functioning, help yourself supply of chilled water.
Now operating a full service kitchen with various egg dishes, a bevy of sandwiches from the reuben to Croque Madame and daily soups, the food compliments the developed coffee menu well and reemphasises how unafraid of experimentation Happy Baristas just is. Testing a range of beans from around Europe as well as local favourites, the Barn and Bonanza, the brew bar and espresso machine are running hot, cupping well-balanced, light roasted coffee from V60 to double espresso into their ACME & CO cups. The light roasts are common for Europe but here you’ll find stronger espresso than most but much lighter filter options and cherry dominated batch brews. For non-coffee-drinkers, a sizeable tea bar with seasonal fusions, cold drinks combining coffee and cocktails and playing with the concept of Nitro drinks, Happy Baristas will leave you feeling fulfilled and refreshed.
